Empakaai Crater Hike
In the Highlands area of the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area (NCA), visitors can break up their vehicle-based safari with some rewarding hiking opportunities. One hidden gem is the stunning Empakaai Crater, located about 40 km northeast of the more famous Ngorongoro Crater.
Upon arriving at Empakaai, you are greeted by breathtaking views of the crater and a glimpse of Oldoinyo Lengai, Tanzania’s most active volcano. Accompanied by an experienced guide and a ranger from the NCA, you will embark on a 30 to 45-minute descent into the crater through lush, mountainous forests.
Once you reach the crater floor, you’ll find excellent birdwatching opportunities around the lake, where you can observe flamingos and other wildlife, including buffalo, hyenas, and elephants.
To fully enjoy this experience, a reasonable level of fitness is required, and sturdy shoes are highly recommended. Exploring Empakaai Crater offers a unique way to appreciate the natural beauty of the Highlands while enjoying an active adventure in a lesser-known part of Tanzania. Consider joining Ankwa Tours and Safaris for this unforgettable journey.
