Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve

Set against a mountainous backdrop, this dry and harshly beautiful wilderness depends on the perennial flow of the Ewaso Ng’iro river for its existence. The river sustains a wonderful number and variety of African animals, with about 900 elephants roaming the reserve. The doum palms and acacia thickets lining its sandy banks and shallows give Samburu a unique character

Background

The diverse wildlife of Ol Pejeta includes species uniquely adapted to the northern drylands, such as Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, and beisa oryx with their impressive horns. Blue-legged Somali ostriches roam the plains alongside bustling flocks of vulturine guineafowl, their glossy hackles contrasting beautifully with bright blue breasts. Bird enthusiasts will delight in spotting numerous bird species during game drives. The area is also home to the three Big Cats: lion, cheetah, and leopard.

Among the most famous residents is the lioness Kamunyak, known as “The Blessed One,” who adopted an oryx calf in 2002, fiercely defending it from predators. Although the calf did not survive, Kamunyak went on to adopt five more, leaving naturalists puzzled by her remarkable maternal instincts. The reserve is named after the Samburu people, semi-nomadic pastoralists proud of their unique traditions and culture.

Wilderness Highlights

Samburu National Reserve is a semi-arid plain located on the southern bank of the northern Ewaso Nyiro River, just 9 km east of Buffalo Springs National Reserve. Established in 1974, this stunning landscape is characterized by the prominent Samburu Hill in the south, which is surrounded by rugged terrain and steep ravines.

The Ewaso Nyiro River serves as the lifeblood of the reserve, providing essential water for the diverse wildlife. Here, crocodiles and hippos share the river with small herds of elephants that enjoy bathing and playing in the muddy brown waters during the heat of the day. Afterward, these majestic creatures return to the lush vegetation of the riverine forest, creating a vibrant and dynamic ecosystem that attracts visitors from around the world.
